DFF was established in1990 in terms of Section 148 and 149 of the Defence Act (Act 44 of 1957) before the Act was repealed by Section 72 (1) (e) of the Defence Act, Act 1 of 2002.

Social Responsibilities
Defence Force Foundation has committed to the social wellbeing of its members by providing assistance through donations or grants to the need of medical assistance or in the case of natural disasters.
NDF Sport Tournaments
For the promotion of Sport, Fitness and Team spirit among the Defence Force members the Foundation is the main sponsor of the NDF Annual Sport Tournament. The tournament was established in 2013.
